Ventilation and limited space are among the reasons why heat gets built up inside your laptop. Generally, the hot air that gets generated through various internal components and hard drive gets blown away with the help of a laptop CPU fan that is fitted inside the housing of the computing device. This fan is generally placed inside a heat sink and is responsible for keeping the central processing unit or CPU cool.

How to Replace a New CPU Cooling Fan in a Laptop

Notice:
(a) Laptop components are very sensitive to cold, heat and jarring. Be careful not to hit, bump or drop any of the components while replacing the CPU Cooling Fan.
(b) Never cover the CPU Cooling Fan vent when using a laptop. Clothes, blankets and pillows blocking the vent will cause the CPU Cooling Fan to stop working. If you run your laptop for an extended period of time without a CPU Cooling Fan, permanent damage may occur.

1. Follow your laptop owner's manual and assembly guide carefully as you disassemble the laptop. Touch something metal periodically to remove static charge, and work on a large table with a bright light source.
2. Turn off the laptop and unplug it. Remove the main battery, CD/DVD drive and the hard drive. The hard drive is usually located in a slot on one side of the laptop. Remove the screw that holds the cover in place, then pull out the hard drive sled.
3. Turn the laptop over and remove the screws on the bottom that hold the keyboard in place. Flip the laptop over, open it, then lift the keyboard up and out. Unplug the flexible ribbon cable that connects the keyboard to the motherboard.
4. Remove the screws that hold the keyboard bezel and palm rest in place. Carefully pry loose any plastic snaps on the sides, then lift the bezel and palm rest up and out.
5. Unplug the laptop CPU Cooling Fan. Remove the screws that hold the heat sink and CPU Cooling Fan in place, then remove the entire unit from the laptop. Remove any thermal compound residue from the bottom of the heat sink and the CPU.
6. Apply a thin layer of thermal compound on the CPU, then replace the heat sink and CPU Cooling Fan. Replace the screws, plug the CPU Cooling Fan back in, then reassemble the laptop.
7. Plug the laptop in and turn it on. After you use it for a few minutes, you should hear the new CPU Cooling Fan running and feel warm air blowing from the vent on the side of the laptop. A laptop CPU Cooling Fan does not run continuously, so don't be concerned if the CPU Cooling Fan shuts off periodically.

Clean the laptop CPU Cooling Fan in 4 Easy Steps

1. Unplug your laptop and remove the battery to prevent any risk of electrical shock while you're cleaning your laptop.
2. Unscrew the panel that contains the CPU Cooling Fan. If you don't know which panel contains the CPU Cooling Fan look at where your vent is located, most likely it's the panel right by the vent. Once unscrewed, remove the panel. Removing the panel will take some force and you will hear loud clicking sounds which are normal but be careful not to break the panel in half.
3. Take your can of compressed air and in short bursts spray your CPU Cooling Fan. Continue to spray until the dust is removed. You should be able to see the dust being removed. Also spray into the vent to remove any dust that may have built up. (Note: Do not turn compressed air can upside down and spray. This will cause liquid to come out with the air and may ruin your computer.)
4. Put the panel back (again, this will take some force to put back into place) and screw in place.
